Occasionally, no matter what I do, there are some items that just need to be ironed. I find it is usually my husband’s work shirts that end up needing an iron (briefly) running over them. So, the essential item here … Continue reading
Top tips for avoiding ironing
Here are my top tips for avoiding ironing and gettting creases out of clothes without having to use the iron.
Wrinkle-releaser products
There are a few wrinkle-releaser products on the market. The product works by lightly misting the clothes, which relaxes the fibers.
Use a tumble dryer
I’m not suggesting drying everything in the dryer but after being hung outside, ten minutes in the dryer does wonders for getting rid of wrinkles!
Add some tennis balls to the dryer
Tennis balls or dryer balls help your clothes dry faster by moving the air around and therefore avoiding your getting too creased
Put wrinkled items back in the dryer with a damp washcloth or towel
If you have items that are still creased, put them in the dryer with a damp washcloth of towel for about ten minutes.
Fold clothes directly out of the dryer
If I leave a clean load of clothes lying on the couch or in the hamper for a day or two, when I come back, they are very creased. Fold them as soon as the dryer is finished.
Hang clothes rather than folding them in a drawer
Clothes get shuffled around in a drawer. If you have the space, hang as much as you can.
Don’t put too much in the washing machine
If clothes don’t have enough room in the washing machine to move around freely, they will inevitably come out more wrinkly.
White vinegar
a cup of white vinegar added to your wash’s rinse water will help relax the wrinkles. Don’t worry, it won’t leave a smell.
Why I hate ironing
Top 5 reasons why I hate ironing
1. I’m really not that good at it
Some friends tell me that they get a real sense of satisfaction in ironing. I just don’t get it. I look at my (small) pile of ironed clothes and think “that will have to do”. I just don’t seem to have a skill or patience for ironing
2. It really isn’t worth the effort
Granted some things do need ironing but using a few “avoidance techniques”, I am sure my most of my clothes look just as good and those that have been ironed
3. I have better things to do
I don’t have an exciting life but I have a busy life. I am a working mum with two preschool children. I don’t have an awful lot of free time and when it comes to house work, there is always that seems more important or more satisfying than ironing.
4. All the effort is undone within five minutes
Whenever my husband and kids put in clothes that I’ve ironed, they are rolling around play fighting or tickling each other within about five minutes so what’s the point? I’m not going to say to my family, don’t have fun in case your clothes get creased!
5. It is never ending!
I very rarely have no clothes waiting to be ironed! I do a pile and think “thank goodness for that!” Within a couple of days, it all seems to be back in the pile taunting me!!
